The Push for Change is a national grass roots movement to raise awareness and funds to prevent youth homelessness in Canada.

The campaign has been fully supported by educators, law enforcement, municipal, provincial and federal leaders since the first steps were taken 16 months ago in St. John’s Newfoundland, on May 1, 2016.

Joe Roberts, former homeless (downtown east side) youth turned successful entrepreneur, is ‘paying it forward’ by pushing a shopping cart 24 km per day for 517 days and sharing his personal story of overcoming adversity while teaching “unlimited possibilities” to thousands of students and adults alike.

  • This campaign is suitable for students in grades 5 and up
  • Check out our PFC School brochure for presentation details
  • Field trip – students should pack appropriate nutrition & dress for the weather; rain or shine

Optional: Having student councils, peer groups, and social justice clubs in your school learn about and promote The Push for Change to their student body is an excellent introduction to this powerful grassroots movement. Their role would be to educate their peers on youth homelessness and The Push for Change before we arrive, so as to have them all excited and enrolled about this Historical Cross Canada Walk they will take part in. We have resources available here to initiate class discussion.

Fundraising is not a mandatory component, but often we have found schools participate in some form of fundraising to tether the students to the cause and allow for a sense of personal fulfillment. All of our operating and trek expenses are fully funded by our sponsors, allowing 100% of funds raised to be allocated to our investment in prevention; The Upstream Project, a school-based youth homeless prevention model. 50% of all funds raised at our Grand Finale will go to Family Services of Greater Vancouver for youth homeless initiatives.

Please do not allow transportation costs to stop your students from joining – we will fund bus rides downtown when necessary. Please contact Marie Roberts, Campaign Director with any questions.
